Well, I’m sick of ordinary names and I HATE cheerleader names like Casey, Stacey, Lesley, Becca, Ashley, Jessica, Cindy, Kimberly, Britney, Brittany, Megan, Laura, Rachel, Lacey…they all sound too ordinary and some even strippery.

I want their names to MEAN something, to be powerful and unique. Diora is the most beautiful name in the world.

i really like the creativity in these names. I like the boys names the best. They don’t seem as extreme as the girls names. My favorite for the girls name would have to be Number 10…love it. Its such a peaceful name. As far as the boys name i like number 2. they’re all wonderful names. those are just my faves. :-)

The only one I like is Avery Eden Savannah, but the Aeterna ruins it. For boys Connor Gabriel Lake isn’t awful.

Why 3 middle names? A bit absurd.

why such long names? what if you get married and have a hyphenated last name? your kids name will be Diora Proxima Unity Hope Smith-Smithson (just an example) that’s way to long and not necessary.

Sorry but i think they are a bit creepy to me i mean i like sort names and long names like that kind of creeps me out I’m not trying to be rude or anything but for my opinion i like the name Eva out of the girls name but there kind of ok!
Zoryanne | Dec 01, 2009

i think the excess of middle names is too much. it ruins some good names. for the girls i like mia, eva, avery, and i like the middle name sophia as a first name. for the boys i like connor and tristan.
Lisa | Dec 01, 2009

Some of the names are incredibly pretty and cute, but others are a little too unusual or weird for my liking. I’m also not keen on the amount of names strung together for each child - it just seems unnecessary. The only full names I like from your list is Tristan Samuel Orion, but I also like sections of some of the other names;
Sophia Eden.
Anastasia Emmy.
Alexandra Emmy.
William Logan.
Tristan Samuel.
Joseph Alexander.

I also like the names Mia, Ever, Isis, Calliope and Maximillian.

Well except none of those things are mentioned in the article. What is mentioned is the ultra-conservative board rewriting the history curriculum to reflect a huge balance toward conservative and republican beliefs.

And now we see who really wants to rewrite history and indoctrinate the children.

Does brown spotting before period in any way mean I'm pregnant?
I take birth control regularly AND use condoms. However, I’ve been spotting dark red to brown stuff (it’s light) for more than a week now before my period started today. I did take 1 pill late this month or last (can’t remember which one it was), meaning instead of taking it at the usual time at night, I took it the following morning and continued on as usual (essentially taking two pills that day). I’ve also been on the pill consistently for over 3 years, with a short break over a year go. I told my doctor all of this and she told me to take a pregnancy test … ? I will tomorrow, but I think it’s kind of silly. No other symptoms are present. No sore breasts, no upset tummy, no increased urination, no missed period (more like an over-active period), NO signs. Is it even possible? The condom has also NEVER broke and when I say never, I mean never. I’m not one of those girls who’s like "it never ever broke (fingers crossed)." I’m very diligent and take precautions against pregnancy seriously. I just can’t seem to figure out why my doctor would suggest I take one. I’m now, of course, freaking out and a bit insulted. Ugh!

sounds more like a hormonal imbalance. that used to happen to me and my doctor put me on a higher dosage of birth control.

Is Wikipedia appropriate for 11-year-olds?
Yahoo! Answers participant "Bill M" recently said here that "Wikipedia has never purported to be appropriate for children, to my knowledge."

Jimmy Wales has in fact said:

"When we go down to younger students, and I don’t have any particular idea of the cut-off dates, but certainly someone a lot younger than 16; a 10-year-old is writing a little short paper for class, and they want to say they got some information from Wikipedia, I think we should just be glad that the kid’s writing and actually thinking about giving credit — due credit — to people who have helped. And I think that’s wonderful."

Source: http://files.libertyfund.org/econtalk/y2 009/Waleswikipedia.mp3 (at about the 19:30 mark)

So, my question is… if the 11-year-old had been doing a report on "gel bracelets" in December 2009, such as those promoted by the Lance Armstong Foundation and the group Make Poverty History, thanks to an infobox at the bottom of the "gel bracelets" article, the 11-year-old may readily have clicked to articles about "Donkey punch", "Gerbilling", "Rainbow party", and the really lovely "Soggy biscuit".

An earlier post here resulted in that info template being removed from the gel bracelets article, thankfully. But the point is, that template had been sitting there since July 30, 2008, thanks to User:Benjiboi (take a look at some of his edits, sometime). The article’s been viewed about 12,000 to 14,000 times a month ( http://stats.grok.se/en/200808/gel_brace let ). How many of those views were 11-year-olds writing a "little short paper for class", who now know all about donkey punches and rainbow parties.

I say that this is NOT wholly the responsibility of "the parents" to stay on top of. Parents are certainly mostly responsible, but not "wholly". If Jimmy Wales, the co-founder of the tax-advantaged project, is saying that his encyclopedia is "wonderful" for an 11-year-old, then when my 11-year-old is exposed to donkey punches and worse at an age that’s inappropriate, if not illegal, for me to be exposing them to this, then I say it is high time that Jimmy Wales and his inept Foundation start taking responsibility and living up to their promotional hype.
Additionally, I am unable to find any white supremacy literature or porn magazines that are 501-c-3, tax-advantaged organizations. So, to compare those types of websites with Wikipedia is not really germane to this discussion.

Short answer: Yes, for a number of reasons, including the gratuitously sexually explicit content, Wikipedia is definitely inappropriate for 11-year-olds. Period.

Longer answer: The sorry truth is that Wikipedia is inappropriate for the participation of people of ANY age, even for those for whom exposure to sexually explicit material is not a real issue. As science educator Dr. Barry Kort puts it: "Wikipedia is a crazy-making place, an ungrounded cloud-cuckooland that I fear is beyond salvation or redemption." Worse still, Wikipedia exploits those with mental illnesses and addictive personalities without scruple or pity in the name of "free culture", providing the world with "the sum total of human knowledge" and That Kid in Africa. The deception here is probably mostly, if not entirely, unintentional, but that does not make it any less cruel.

Wikipedia is just a collection of facts. If you start taking down some articles, pretty soon you’ll be taking down the whole lot; they all link in to each other.

Besides, why not get the information for your child, if you’re that concerned?
Sayum | Jan 18, 2010

Hi,
First of all, not all 11-year olds are the same.

Anyway, I think some Wikipedia articles are ok for the normal 11-year old, but most articles are too complex for children in this age group. You will have to read the article through with them and help him/her to extract the information they require.

Wikipedia is still wonderful even though it does have adult content, but then . . . so does our newspapers and text book encyclopedias!
esuz | Jan 18, 2010

I favor wikipedia myself. They have an overall excellent site and are a valuable source of information to the people of the world. To expect perfection from any merely human enterprise, is an expectation which will surely fail to materialize.

I think your problem is that you do not want the responsibilities of parenthood along with the joys. I don’t blame you, because really..who does? You are afraid that you will fail to teach your values or that they will be ignored or overlooked by the child due to the huge mass of conflicting information available now.

This is only natural..you are merely human too. But in this case I am pretty sure you are mistaken.

I quote from en.wikipedia.org:

"A moral panic is the intensity of feeling expressed in a population about an issue that appears to threaten the social order.[1] Stanley Cohen, author of the seminal Folk Devils and Moral Panics (1972), says a moral panic occurs when "[a] condition, episode, person or group of persons emerges to become defined as a threat to societal values and interests."[2] Those who start the panic when they fear a threat to prevailing social or cultural values are known by researchers as "moral entrepreneurs", while people who supposedly threaten the social order have been described as "folk devils." Moral panics are in essence controversies that involve arguments and social tension and in which disagreement is difficult because the matter at its center is taboo.[3] The media have long operated as agents of moral indignation, even when they are not self-consciously engaged in crusading or muckraking. Simply reporting the facts can be enough to generate concern, anxiety or panic.."

This is my view (in the minority, I know):

The implications are clear. Recent much ballyhooed moral panics include Pedophilia (or paedophilia), The War on Terror, The War on Drugs, and many others.

These things are a result of to much trust in authority figures and the media.

Blind belief and obedience to authority is very un-American!

Educate yourself and quit looking to authority figures for the truth (the one thing which they will never tell you!) and you will be happier.

You can not have freedom by giving it up for security. You can never protect your child from growing up and learning about sex and adult life, because the essence of life is change. You must merely make sure they have access to the correct information and know how you stand on these issues.

Remember: Only the dead are safe from all harm and have no worries or responsibilities.
Anarchist | Jan 18, 2010

As long as one can type in "erection," "penis," or "ejaculation" into Wikipedia and be taken to pages with pictures and video, it will be hard to make the case that Wikipedia is child-friendly.

Nothing in Wikipedia is censored; consequently, it is by definition not kid-safe.

But does that matter?

I say it doesn’t.

Wikipedia is a place to find and access knowledge. Parents can no more fault its "inappropriateness" than they can fault the existence of white supremacy literature or porn magazines.
Wolfe | Jan 19, 2010

I did say that, and when you first posted this question (actually, it was about 10-year-olds), I admitted I was wrong and that you had corrected me.

I also said that I still think monitoring what children see is the responsibility of the parents. If you’re so worried about your teenage daughter seeing an image of a penis on some website, you’re going to check out that website and see if there are pictures of penises on that website. (Look "penis" up on Conservapedia).

Here your question is asked and answered: Wikipedia is not appropriate for 10-year-olds, 11-year-olds, 19-year-olds, maybe even adults. Move on, counselor. Talk to your local PTA. Leave a comment on Charity Navigator and GuideStar. Talk to the IRS. Write your congressman.
Bill M | Jan 19, 2010

To be strict:
"If Jimmy Wales, the co-founder of the tax-advantaged project, is saying that his encyclopedia is "wonderful" for an 11-year-old"
He didn’t say that.

To the point:
As of your child, if you don’t, you can use software that could block sites (for example you can search "net nanny alternative" to find those that are free).

As of wikipedia responsiblility:
You can propose them an new kind of warning sign.

MyWikiBiz, my deep disdain of you is magnified by such a horrendous essay that probably no one completely read through. Your points are not backed.

For example, it is "not wholly the responsibility of ‘the parents’ to stay on top of" your supposed concern?
Excuse me?
Let’s examine this more deeply. There is so much out there, in the world and on the Internet. There is porn and other disgusting things children should not see. Are you saying that the creators of porn should be blamed for children accidentally finding their site? All they are doing is trying to make a living, trying to bring home to bacon. These people are all hardworking people who merely want to survive. Why should Jimmy Wales be blamed that children find their way onto Wikipedia?

What should i watch first season 10 or the second movie "ark of truth", i wona watch them in order and im not sure which comes first in the story line.

Season 10 comes first. "Ark of Truth" (which is the first movie, btw) wraps up the Ori storyline that evolved in seasons 9 and 10. You’d have problems understanding AoT if you watched it before watching season 10.
The second movie is "Continuum" and set after AoT.

what does "I like Ike" mean?
what does it mean when Indiana Jones says "I like Ike" in Indiana Jones and the kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Dwight Eisenhower, nicknamed Ike, was the WW2 general who was Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces on D-Day. IN 1952 he won the Republican nomination and became the 34th. President of the USA. The "I like Ike" slogan was created by a Peter G Peterson, when he realised that many Americans trusted Eisenhower and saw him as a better alternative to Truman.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was set in 1957, during the Eisenhower Presidency, which was anti-Communist. The villains in the film were Soviets and so, when asked for any last words, Indiana Jones said "I like Ike".
