I liked The Uninvited very much. & Also The Life Of David Gale.
- Yes, i know there old movies.

Tonight i just want to watch a movie, The Life Of David Gale was NOT scary but had a good twist to it. Two actually.

I want to watch a SCARY movie, with a twist preferably. Im watching it alone so something that id be scared enough to have a heart attack.

any recommendations?
Thanks.
With a link please! free & online. I can’t download (: & nothing i have to sign up on.

Thanks!

Try "High Tension", or "Haute Tension" for a decent horror movie with a twist. To be honest, with exception to the ending, it’s almost identical in plot to Dean Koontz’s "Intensity", which is the better movie of the two.

What are some ways to encourage change in your parents lifestyle?
My parents divorced when I was very young, and I lived with my mom until I was seventeen, after which I moved in with my father (he’s lived alone since the divorce, about thirteen years). We were living in an apartment that he had been in for two years previous to me coming to stay with him. He had never cleaned the floors in the kitchen or the bathroom, and by the time I moved in, the dirt was so caked on that they were impossible to clean (the rest of the apartment was similarly "well kept"). He is a retired man, and until the October that just passed, he did nothing but play WoW on his computer. He would literally sit there from 5am when he woke up until 9pm when he went to bed- he’s not a people person, and does not have one friend. While it is not the lifestyle I choose for myself, I accept that he is a homebody and a loner, because he is comfortable and "happy" living his life this way. I put "happy" in quotation marks because he has a very negative outlook. Not negative in a "what’s the point to life" kind of way- He rarely speaks of the positive things about his day or his life; The most used word in his vocabulary is "ignorant"… He uses this to describe women, seniors, people of different race (although I’m never sure if he’s joking when he talks about race), and lately he’s taken to calling gay men qu__rs. If he isn’t complaining, he’s trying to give me the biography of each actor we see on television. "Oh! That’s ________! He was on ________ and ________ and in the movie ________. He married what’s her name? _________. I wonder where he lives now! Last time I saw him, he was ______." It wouldn’t be so bad if this didn’t happen literally, three or four times per show. That’s the kind of answer he gives when I ask about his day, after he’s told me of the ignorant people he came across. He tells me about an actor. I think he does this because he’s always on Wikipedia. ANYWAY, before he got his job, he only showered at most once a week, although he does his laundry on a routine basis (once a week usually, if not more often). Since he’s got his job, he showers almost every day, or at least every other day. We moved in the middle of January to a townhouse within a small village, and while I’m grateful for a fresh start in a clean place, it’s difficult for me to maintain by myself. I wake up in the morning and dishes are piled up for me to do, and there are crumbs all over the floor even though I just swept, mopped, vacuumed and washed the dishes the night before. I can’t complain TOO much as I don’t have a job ATM so cleaning gives me something to do.

Now we come to his eating habits. My dad is a bigger man, of about 280 pounds (he lost some weight last year), who is constantly "on a diet". I put THIS in quotation marks because on weekdays, this is his typical meal plan; He eat breakfast at home, an omelet and a coffee, then goes to Tim Horton’s and gets a coffee and a couple of donuts. For lunch he goes to a fast food restaurant and orders a meal as well as eating his packed lunch of a sandwich, two apples and some tuna, then comes home and expects dinner to be ready for him. He will have a potato, a couple of chicken breasts or a couple of steaks, some french fries or some vegetables (the veggies that I have to force him to eat), then later have a sandwich, then later have some ice cream. The man will sit down and eat an entire cheesecake for a snack. He CANNOT leave left overs, so he will eat everything I cook for dinner. He’s the kind of guy that can order a three person Chinese take-out meal and have it in one sitting, then be hungry two hours later. This terrible eating habit combined with his laziness worries me- even if I convince him to only buy healthy food, he will come home the next day with a tub of ice cream and frozen fries, or a pizza. He’s a food addict. He has no order or discipline, and as his daughter I need to get him to change his habits! HOW CAN I DO THIS/WHERE DO I START??

You didn’t mention your age, but it sounds like you are pretty mature. Sounds like Pop needs professional help. Get with a counselor and talk. Seriously, you can’t fix this on your own. My Pop crashed like that when I was about 22. Got mad at me for ratting him out. Thanked me for saving his life later.

Your father is suffering from a severe case of depression.

It’s a debilitating disease and he can get help for it. It’s not just laziness. He’s sick.

"as his daughter I need to get him to change his habits" - NO!!!!! You are not the food police, you are not his doctor, you are not his wife who he answers to!!! You are his daugther!!!!

LEAVE THE POOR MAN ALONE!!!!!
Serene E | Feb 07, 2010

Your father needs a certain level of help that you can’t provide. For starters, he has to admit that he has a problem - and HE has to come to that realization by himself. There’s absolutely nothing you can do to make him realize he has a problem if he doesn’t see it on his own.

If he admits to you that he has a problem, your next step will be to get him to a doctor. They’ll know where to start with his depression and eating disorder.

But always, always remember that YOU cannot control his behavior. He has to do it himself. He has to be willing to get professional help if he needs it. YOU cannot do anything except encourage him to get help. YOU can’t fix him. It’s not up to you and you can’t do it anyway. So don’t take on the task of improving his life if he doesn’t want it. You’ll only get frustrated at each other. Love him for who he is and enjoy the time you have with him now… and if you can’t do that then you have to walk away from the situation.

Good luck to you both.

Is it possible to lasso the moon?
Is it possible to Lasso the moon like on Bruce Almighty?

No. Nobody can magically pull the moon closer to earth. However, you could attempt to use a rope… but it would need to be fire proof and extremely durable because when things pass through the earth’s atmosphere, they burn up.

Good luck :) :)

the cost of philosophical materialism?
While it is hard to garner everything Chesterton is trying to say as this is simply an excerpt, and not the whole of the book thus far, I believe there is enough expressed in these two paragraphs to at least make clear what he is trying to argue concerning the insanity of purely materialistic worldview, and that of someone who accepts possibly spirituality, something beyond mere cause and effect.

What do you think?

"Spiritual doctrines do not actually limit the mind as do materialistic denials. Even if I believe in immortality I need not think about it. But if I disbelieve in immortality I must not think about it. In the first case the road is open and I can go as far as I like; in the second the road is shut. But the case is even stronger, and the parallel with madness is yet more strange. For it was our case against the exhaustive and logical theory of the lunatic that, right or wrong, it gradually destroyed his humanity. Now it is the charge against the main deductions of the materialist that, right or wrong, they gradually destroy his humanity; I do not mean only kindness, I mean hope, courage, poetry, initiative, all that is human. For instance, when materialism leads men to complete fatalism (as it generally does), it is quite idle to pretend that it is in any sense a liberating force. It is absurd to say that you are especially advancing freedom when you only use free thought to destroy free will. The determinists come to bind, not to loose. They may well call their law the ‘chain’ of causation. It is the worst chain that ever fettered a human being. You may use the language of liberty, if you like, about materialistic teaching, but it is obvious that this is just as inapplicable to it as a whole as the same language when applied to a man locked up in a mad-house. You may say, if you like, that the man is free to think himself a poached egg. But it is surely a more massive and important fact that if he is a poached egg he is not free to eat, drink, sleep, walk, or smoke a cigarette. Similarly you may say, if you like, that the bold determinist speculator is free to disbelieve in the reality of the will. But it is a much more massive and important fact that he is not free to raise, to curse, to thank, to justify, to urge, to punish, to resist temptations, to incite mobs, to make New Year resolutions, to pardon sinners, to rebuke tyrants, or even to say ‘thank you’ for the mustard.

In passing from this subject I may note that there is a queer fallacy to the effect that materialistic fatalism is in some way favourable to mercy, to the abolition of cruel punishments or punishments of any kind. This is startlingly the reverse of the truth. It is quite tenable that the doctrine of necessity makes no difference at all; that it leaves the flogger flogging and the kind friend exhorting as before. But obviously if it stops either of them it stops the kind exhortation. That the sins are inevitable does not prevent punishment; if it prevents anything it prevents persuasion. Determinism is quite as likely to lead to cruelty as it is certain to lead to cowardice. Determinism is not inconsistent with the cruel treatment of criminals. What it is (perhaps) inconsistent with is the generous treatment of criminals; with any appeal to their better feelings or encouragement in their moral struggle. The determinist does not believe in appealing to the will, but he does believe in changing the environment. He must not say to the sinner, ‘Go and sin no more,’ because the sinner cannot help it. But he can put him in boiling oil; for boiling oil is an environment. Considered as a figure, therefore, the materialist has the fantastic outline of the figure of the madman. Both take up a position at once unanswerable and intolerable."

–G.K. Chesterton, Orthodoxy, Chapter II

I don’t agree with this part: "He must not say to the sinner, ‘Go and sin no more,’ because the sinner cannot help it."

If determinism is true, then all of our actions are determined by the net forces acting on the brain. When somebody says, "Go and sin no more," this itself has causal power. It is one among other causal forces, and in some cases, the net effect is that the person will go and sin no more.

But besides, if it’s true that on determinism that "the sinner cannot help it," then it’s equally true that the determinist cannot help telling people to "Go and sin no more," so by Chesterton’s reasoning, it makes no sense to say that the determinist "must not say it," since he can’t help saying it.

I totally agree that materialism entails determinism, but if Chesterton were consistent, he would not make any recommendations for what we should or shouldn’t do on the assumption of materialism since, on his reasoning, we can’t help what we do if materialism is true.

Jonathan | Sep 07, 2009

Too much. Can you ask a few questions instead of this book?
Barb | Sep 07, 2009

I do love me some good Chesterton fallacies.

For instance, he argues that a materialistic determinist will see appeals to the will as futile (as free will would be seen as something illusory resulting from a chain of past events) and that rigorous punishment of criminals is perfectly compatible with such a worldview as a means of changing behavior.

While it may be true that such punishment is compatible with materialistic philosophy, Chesterton fails to take into account personal preference for less scalding (and perhaps more effective) methods of changing behavior, such as his cherished "appeals to the will" (which, as a user wisely points out below, are themselves causal influences).

Given that humanity may easily be evolutionarily predisposed to altruism or at least to empathy, I would venture the opposite of what he suggests: That materialists are more likely to take The Path of Least Bloodshed, with the madman remaining in his place on the fringes and not finding himself the most likely result of adopting such materialistic philosophies.
The Path of Least Bloodshed | Sep 07, 2009

As a former materialist, I can only say that the freedom proffered by materialism is illusory unless, like the nettle, grasped firmly. The knowledge that truth and error, love and hate, good and evil, life and death even, are absolute equivalents is freeing if you can refrain from killing yourself out of boredom. The materialist who refuses to embrace chaos is, among men, most to be pitied because he rides the coattails of theism without deriving any benefit from doing so.

peace
Michael | Sep 07, 2009

This material is very hard to read. Rules regarding English composition were ignored, making it difficult, if not impossible to discern what Chesterton is actually discussing.

Good paragraph structure demands an opening and closing sentence that introduce and recap the thought presented/described in the paragraph. He rambles at best.

If I were editing his material, I’d kick it back and tell him to rewrite it for clarity.
Old Timer Too | Sep 07, 2009

The entire quote is nonsense. First, whether or not one *assumes* materialism, if it turns out to be accurate, one can only "progress" as far as it allows. One need not be "liberated" from the truth, whether that turns out to be materialism or not. Without the "chain of causation", Mr. Chesterton has no reason to believe in a deity, and any appeal he makes to the reason of others is little more than hypocrisy.

Beyond that he makes one huge appeal to consequences, which amount to fallacious reasoning. There are good reasons to think materialism is false, but his arguments are little more than category mistakes, since they are not in themselves evidence.
